Yep

6 Aug

I believe that this video gives a good example of the extreme lengths that extreme metal fans will go to for their music.  There is really no explanation as to why the person decided that this would be a good or effective way to show their desire for Slayer, or even the reason or motivation to do such a thing, but it does clearly display that there are people willing to do such odd acts that “normal” people would find it crazy or stupid.  It also shows the dedication to the type of music they love and that they are more dedicated to their music than most other people, when was the last time you saw someone carve “Hanna Montana” into their arm, or even get something like a tattoo of “Nirvana”?

What`s in common?

6 Aug

For my MGP, I am going to talk about the sitcoms. From my personal perspective and my observation, I figured out there are many common things between Chinese and American popular sitcoms. I picked Friends as a successful sitcom from America, and Home with Kids as a presentative from China. While I was watching those sitcoms, there is a core problem in my mind, why they are so famous that many people can spend lots of time watching them. If they are just some funny people acting in some kind of mischievous gestures, they would not gain so many applause. So what is the point? From the image I post here for Friends, there is one sentence, Friends till the end. I think this is the core theme that Friends wants us to understand, we all have friends in our lives, while they are not only some people we spend time together, Friends teaches us how can we have a friend till the end. Another image is a photo from Home with Kids. Let me ask you guys a question, what are you thinking when you saw this picture? It reminds you of your family right? This sitcom represents a family`s daily life, they are so close to ours. In a word, the most important quality that a good sitcom should have is the accordance with the audience.

My topic of MGP is the relationship of costumes of ethnic groups in China and Chinese culture. China is a big muti-ethnic country, every ethnic group has their unique culture. This video shows costumes of all 56 ethnic groups in China. Every kind of costume is unique and reflect their culture. Costumes is an important part of culture. This video provide a vivid example of costumes, and also shows that how ethnic group shows their beauty, their taste, their personalities, and their culture by wearing unique costumes to dance. Audiences should not only enjoy their elegant dance, but also enjoy their colorful costumes. I will add this video to a PowerPoint for my presentation. In the beginning of presentation, I will use this video to analyze the characteristic of these costumes of different ethnic groups and explain the relationship about costumes and culture. The video is little bit long, I will only use part of it as presentation.

This is a little cartoon that describes my topic pretty well. The parent is talking to the girl about the big picture copyright negotiations while the girl is illegally downloading stuff in the background. This illustrates how insignificant copyrights seem to be. When the girl started downloading whatever it is, she probably didnt even consider the whole copyright thing as far as who rightfully owns the media. And by the looks of the picture, she doesnt seem to care about copyrights. This also shows how little awareness there is about copyrighted material. Copyrights are constantly being traded, expired, renewed, etc. but people who download dont have to encounter this. There is nothing that pops up showing the copyright info when you download something. So if people never have to confront it, why should they care about it? This cartoon shows how some people may not even be aware that they are doing something wrong when they download copyrighted material.

Well, my topic is about the culture conflict and cooperation people meet with when they go to a new country or society with a totally different culture. As a special group of immigrant, I think the experiences of international students are good resources for my topic. I got this picture from Ohio State’s website, which shows students of Ohio State study aboard. For students who study aboard, we meet with culture conflicts from several aspects, including daily life, academic study and research, and society affairs. There can be much difficulty and inadaptation at first, such as totally different styles of daily habits, and study methods and ways. But as the time and the adaptation process past by, international students are always doing well. We can see in the photo, students from different country and culture can be good friends and have a good life in the new environment. We not only are able to adapt to the new life in a different country, but also want to success in our study and work, and want to find and acquire our dreams here.

7th blog: New fashion

6 Aug

In my MGP project, I will talk about the new fashion. Fashion means new popular thing, but now the fashion trend tend to be a little boring. The pictures on the left is the audience of a Dior fashion. It is obvious that they are not interested in it. Every year, there are a lot of big fashion shows, but sometimes they just repeat the same thing and the old styles. We can see that the clothes are beautiful, but not creative. In my opinion, fashion is art. It is not only showing the beautiful things.

At the same time, there are some people inventing their fashion and certainly this become the new fashion. Lady Gaga in a representative of the a kind of alternative fashion. The bowknot hair style is strange but really matches her perfectly. As I said before, since fashion is a art, like the paintings, sometimes even it is strange and hard to understand for other people, if it shows can show your own characteristic, it will become your indentification and that is the real fashion.

In my project, I will introduce more strange and new fashion from different countries at different time. Also , I will  use more videos and pictures as my genre.

Women Vs Men

6 Aug

Well my MGP is about ethnic clothing and the different outfits that they wear. The picture above is one of traditional wedding outfits Somali women wear on their special day. The bride in this picture as you can see is the one wearing the white color and her bridesmaids are those sitting on her sides. In Somali culture a lot of women choose to dress up this way and some of them go with more modern look. The bride and her bridesmaids are wearing color coordinated jewelry on their neck and hands to match with their outfit. There are also many cultural decorations around the bride to give a more traditional feel to the wedding than say a modern wedding where the bride is dressed up like western.

The second picture is what the older men use to wear back in the days, but as of late many grooms dress up this way for their traditional wedding to match their bride. This outfit is two big clothe that wrap around each other, one is suppose to cover the bottom half like a trouser and the other one is covering his top half on top of his shirt just like the picture. The difference between the women outfit and men outfit is that a lot of men sometimes chicken out and decide to wear something else or tailor them in a modern way. But all of these different options are acceptable as long as the bride and the groom are in agreement.

Jimmy Page: He’s still got it (Post 7)

6 Aug

This is a video clip from the Documentary “It Might Get Loud”

In the clip, there are 3 people. The Edge (U2), Jack White (White Stripes & The Raconteurs), and the one and only Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin). This clip illustrates one of the main points of my MGP. Guitarists that push the boundries and innovate new techniques, THOSE are the guitarists who’s sounds we remember and seem to develop a sense of personal tone.

The sloppy, fat mid-range, muddy tones that Jimmy coaxes out of his Les Paul on that famous riff from “Whole Lotta Love” is his charachteristic sound. One string of notes, One power chord, or one not-so-perfect bend is all it takes to identify him. Page did what very few of his time dared. Instead of the clean-cut techniques that were common, Page would use a “distortion pedal” (simply put, it’s a pedal that your guitar is run through that pushes it into overdrive and causes the clean sound to achieve higher amounts of gain and break up, hence referred to as “dirty” or high-gain tone) combined with a not-so-clean technique that gave him his classic sound. Think of other famous guitarists and what they are synonymous with. Jimi Hendrix – The Wah pedal, The Edge – Rever/Delay effects, Pete Townsend – Gated/Overdriven Mid-range, or Duane Allman – Slide guitar. All of these guitarists were at the forefront when these techniques or technologies came out, or perfected them with a sense of style to be considered masters of a ceratin technique. The idea is simple. A guitarist cannot designate a single tone as his personal sound, rather his personal tone develops with the experience he gets, whether it be in the studio or on the road

For a slight insight into a tone that i’ve been using often onstage (This would be for a Blues Solo)

1990 Gibson Les Paul Classic on the Bridge pickup (’57 buckers, Elixir .010’s)

Mesa Boogie Nomad 45 (With a fresh set of Sovtek Tubes) set to the high gain channel, dialed in with a hefty amount of mid-range and Treble, with the Bass pulled back. A touch of reverb, a hefty presence, and a high amount of gain to get this amp into it’s sweet spot

Pedal Board (Luther Drive by GMD, Forced Induction Overdrive by Catalinbread, PH-2 Phaser – Boss, Cool Cat Chorus – Danelectro, Pitchblack Chromatic Tuner – Korg, CryBaby 585Q Wah – Dunlop, Voodoo Power – Voodoo Labs)

That’s the basic overview of my stage rig. Unfortunately when you get to the studio, things get a lot more complicated. But more on that later.

Some of the first toothbrushes were invented in China in the fifteenth century.  They were made of wild boar’s hairs and cattle bones (Toothbrush expert.com).  Now days, there are a wide variety of products on the market for oral health, and sometimes it is difficult to make a choice.  Which product is the best option; a manual toothbrush or an electrical toothbrush?  There is no right answer.  Each person should choose whichever product best fits his or her needs.  For instance, people with special needs and limited manual dexterity like the elderly and children, may clean more effectively with an electric toothbrush.  However, if you are a good brusher AND A GOOD FLOSSER, a manual toothbrush will work just fine for you and will save you some money.  The question is, “Are you a good brusher and flosser?”  In my project, I am going to demonstrate a technique where you can easily check the quality of you brushing at home.
