Thompson library

30 Jun

Before the “field trip”, I never observe how everybody performs in the space where we spend lots of time there everyday. I have a new look at all the places: the oval, the Thompson library and the Wexner Center.

Comparing with the other places, Thompson library is the one I would like to mention here. Although library is designed for the study purpose, it also has some differentiations. In the first floor of the library, there are lots of group study rooms for discussion and team work. Because it’s near the entrance of the library, lots of people pass by; it is easy to get distraction. I notice that when we passing through the first floor, almost 70% of people raise their heads to see us. Therefore, if you want to study efficiently, get avoid of the first floor. Form the second floor, the situation becomes better, everyone pay attention to their studies. From my personal experience, for the study purpose, the higher floor, the better.

In the library, everyone is a kind of serious, reviewing the book or doing the computer works. Everyone is quite and do not want to interrupt the others. The quite has already become the culture in every library.

Do not feel so bored when you study, try to find a different ways to study everyday. You can choose to sit with some people doing the homework together, or sit alone in the sofa with a cup of coffee. If you prefer to study in with a pleasant mood, there are also some seats near the window, where you could have the overall view of the oval.

Overall, Thompson library is a perfect place for study.

Sometimes a “field trip” around the campus will be very interesting and in my opinion the most interesting place would be the whole building which contains Caldwell, Dreese lab and Baker system engineering building. Finely marble ground and the white clean wall inside make this place much more nicer than before,  providing everyone a place to thinking and analysis whatever problems related to their field. There is a lodge between Caldwell and Dreese, which acts like a kind of bridge. As the three majors: computer engineering, computer science and electrical engineering are very related to each other, the three places are connected. Finally, during autumn, spring and winter quarters, there will be a lot of students get enrolled in classes, there will be lots of people in this building during weekdays and even weekends. There are lots of advanced computers and circuits analytical devices that we can use, which will be very convenient for everyone. We, students, as bodies in this space, most of which dressed like a regular people, are encouraged to work in this building to finish our projects and homework, or even just rest ourselves. I think it’s a good place to be given the concepts of bodies and space.

Walking around the campus here at OSU, one can see how people act differently in different areas.  The place I am choosing to write about is not a location we walked by on our “field trip”, yet the building is right next to ours. I chose a building I have spent some time in, the engineering library.  It is a pretty simple building, a sitting area with computers, a sitting area without computers, a front desk, and a food  counter.  The mood in the place is very relaxed, and it is very quiet most of the time.  The mood of the building seems to discourage people to make loud noises or do anything very active.  It certainly seems like the kind of place that should be used for studying, or doing some kind of silent activity.  The bodies inside of the library are usually relaxed in a chair looking at a computer or doing some type of reading.  This location gives off the sense that it should be used for educational purposes, compared to others that promote more physical activity.

RPAC “bodies in space”

When I think of the RPAC (recreational physical activity center) here at OSU, I first think of a space with a very specific purpose for “bodies”.  The RPAC is the large central workout center at OSU.  If you have ever walked through the RPAC you will notice that most people there are dressed a particular way.  Most are dressed in loose fitting clothing.  You will also notice that the staff at the RPAC are typically all wearing nice polo shirts and appear to be dressed “business causual”.

The MANY different rooms within the RPAC all appear to have a specific purpose as well.  There any many different courts from basketball to squash to raquetball.  Depending on the court, the people occupying them also appear to be dressed a particular way.  There are rooms with weights that seem to have more muscular males occupying it.  There are also rooms with more cardio type equipment that seems to have more slender both males and females.  I feel it’s a safe assessment to say that if you go to the RPAC, you are going for a particular reason and will be dressed a particular way.

The RPAC is a great example of observing “bodies in space”.
